Marine science
The tools to respond to a crisis
...The Gulf of Mexico is now the site of the worst environmental disaster in U.
S. history. And while its long-term impact is unknown, it’s already clear the
region will be a hotspot for research, development, test and evaluation related to
the spill.
...“It will be measured in decades, not years,” said one marine scientist.
...Fortunately, this region has the intellectual tools to respond. The states along
the coast have scores of federal, state and private labs that specialize in marine
science and complimentary technology fields.
...With all those pieces in place and a crisis at their doorstep, much of the region’
s future economic activity will involve the spill. Applied research likely will lead
to new products and services. And that will involve technology transfer offices,
incubators, science parks and more. Billions will flow into the region, and the
best and brightest may be drawn to the region to participate in projects that span
decades.
...And South Mississippi, home of nearly two dozen marine science labs and a
huge federal operation with the largest contingent of oceanographers in the
nation, will play a pivotal role in this watershed event.
...A list of the marine science operations in South Mississippi, along with a list of
Gulf Coast marine science expertise, can be found on Page 2. A profile of one
of the laboratories playing a role can be found on Page 7.
